Summary:

The City Island Library with Walter Jubinsky and Mary Gaspary

Volusia County librarians Walter Jubinsky and Mary Gaspary will share their unique perspective on the history of the Daytona Beach Regional Library on City Island and the S. Cornelia Young Memorial Library on the Peninsula. There has been a library on City Island since 1909 when winter resident James Gamble (co-founder of Procter & Gamble) donated funds to build a small structure there. The Cornelia Young Library, with its distinctive Mission-style design, was constructed in 1916 and was a branch of the Volusia County Library system until 2010 when it was permanently closed.

The current City Island Library building opened in 1977 and was extensively renovated following flood damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. Repeated proposals to relocate the library and sell the land to developers have met with intense opposition from city residents and the library remains a cherished public institution.
