Adventures in Scale:Lawson Diggett, Daytona and the Birth of the Modern EraPresented by Dr. Louis Kemp, PhD

Have you ever wondered who made the Museum’s diorama of the Daytona Boardwalk and why? Join us for a retrospective of the life of Lawson Diggett, the model’s creator and one of the most imaginative Daytonans of the 20th century.

Lawson grew up on Atlantic Avenue when Daytona was the epicenter of experiments with the modern era’s defining inventions – the automobile and the airplane. As a front-row spectator of the early land speed trials and flying exhibitions, Lawson was fascinated by the changes in scale and perspective from the cockpit of an airplane or behind the wheel of a speeding car. Over sixty years, he produced a profusion of model cars, planes, and miniature landscapes to capture the experience of aerial flight and high-speed travel.

Some, such as his Boardwalk model and collection of early racecars, were used as promotional advertisements, but Lawson Diggett had modest commercial ambitions and remained ever the consummate craftsman and artist. Come meet the man behind the models!
